3M History
3M was founded in 1902 by four Duluth, Minnesota businessmen: William L. McKnight, Herman H. Kohlsaat and brothers Robert Thomsen and Charles Landon (the latter two served as the company’s first president and vice president respectively). The name “3M” was invented by Dr. J. Robert Frosch, who was later to become the first chief chemist at the company’s St. Paul research lab.
The company’s first product line – sandpaper – sold so well that within three years 3M began selling additional sandpaper products as well as glass for automobiles mirrors, awnings for railroad cars, and more than 300 types of abrasives.[1]

3M was founded by Henry S. Bryan, Hermon W. Cable, John Dwan, William A. McGonagle and Dr. J. Danley Budd on June 13th 1902 in Two Harbors Minnesota as a mining company to supply abrasive products for the booming lumber industry. The company name was originally M stands for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company while being opened on P is for Philip Dodds who invented sandpaper at this time period but it has been debated whether it should be “D” or “P” because Philip Dodds did not receive credit until the 1920s so in order to make sure he received recognition 3M started using both letters instead of just one.
The company’s first products included corundum (diamond) and garnet abrasives used by carpenters and woodworkers; however within a few years they expanded into other markets including carbon paper which revolutionized office work because it meant that people didn’t have to write out documents by hand anymore! This gave rise to rapid growth over many decades resulting in today’s diversified global organization serving customers around world through numerous product lines focused on innovation leadership development manufacturing excellence service quality stewardship ethics responsibility social responsibility sustainable operations social responsibility diversity community involvement customer focus mutual respect leadership accountability
